What to wear to a newborn & baby photoshoot

WHAT TO WEAR TO A NEWBORN & BABY PHOTOSHOOT - YOUR WARDROBE GUIDE

When booking a photo shoot you will have so many questions in mind. One of which is “what do we wear?!”. This is actually an important one, because what you wear makes a huge difference to the final image. In this blog “what to wear to a newborn & baby photoshoot”, I will take you through three simple steps, to help you choose your perfect outfit.

As a new mum, we usually feel a little uncomforable in our skin and a little less confident. And it’s my job to take that stress away and make you feel your best.

So, here are my tips when choosing what to wear:

SIMPLE BUT BEAUTIFUL…

Keep it simple!

To make sure the focus is on you and your baby, eliminating any distraction is key!

My first suggestion is to wear clothing with no bright prints, logos, text or cartoon characters.

Doing just that, keeps the focus solely on what’s important, and that is your baby!

Therefore a plain white or neutral blouse with nice comfortable jeans/chinos (preferably light in colour) or a lovely white/neutral dress works perfectly.

For dads I always suggest a white t-shirt and jeans or chinos.

RELAXED…

Whether you are booking a newborn or an older baby photo shoot comfort is everything.

Feeling yourself and comfortable will naturally make you more relaxed during the shoot.

There is nothing worse than feeling like your clothing is clinging to you. Or feeling hot and not yourself when you’ve just had a baby.

My tip is, find something that fits your body nicely. Something that is not too tight and clingy and nothing that you may feel sweaty in.

A lovely loose dress that compliments your figure is perfect!

Or if you are not a dress person I would opt for some trousers or light coloured jeans and a comfortable but stylish blouse.

Click through the gallery for some examples.

STYLISH…

And the last one I wanted to include in here is “choosing something stylish”. Or something that simply makes you feel nice!

As much as comfort is the most important, I still want you to feel special and beautiful on the day.

This is where I think a lovely relaxed, white or neutral dress always works well!

You will feel your best but comfortable and relaxed!

And as a mum myself I know that throwing on something a little prettier, something stylish, instantly lifts my mood and makes me feel great (even after some sleepless nights).

Now I am sure you may already have something in your closet that fits the brief but if not, I have put together a pinterest board for some extra ideas. I hope this blog has been helpful, but if you have any further questions, just drop me a message here.

MY TOP MOTHERS DAY GIFTS
My Top Mothers Day Gifts - Barnsley family photographer

Let’s talk a little bit about motherhood and why I love Mother’s Day. Motherhood is truly the most rewarding job in the world. The most self-sacrificing yet the one that truly fills your soul. Never before have I experienced the true meaning of tiredness, guilt, constant fear but yet have an overflowing heart and be filled with gratitude.

Although Mothers Day isn’t the only day to celebrate all the wonderful things about motherhood. It’s a great reminder to appreciate our wonderful Mums. An extra day in the year to make a Mum feel that extra special, be pampered and truly spoiled by the little loves.

And I believe it’s even more important after the year we’ve had. From not being able to experience the same kind of pregnancy and birth with the nearest and dearest. All the normal things that you would usually experience with them, completely stripped away. It’s even more important to spoil her.

Oh and of course not forgetting the mums that are having to juggle being a full time mum, working mum, a cook, a cleaner and now even a full time teacher.

So this year if you really want to spoil her or want to be spoilt yourself (make sure you leave this out for dads to see), have a look at my “Top Mothers Day Gifts”. It’s a small collection of my absolute favourites.

MUM & ME PHOTO SHOOT

Although I have added a few extra gifts in this blog. I do truly believe that there is no better present than a Mum & Me photo shoot. So dads if you are reading this, listen up.

Forget about the regular supermarket bunch of roses and chocolates (although we love these too), it is something we tend to get each year. And after a while it gets a little repetitive. If you truly want to spoil her for all the wonderful efforts of looking after the children whilst stuck in lockdown and homeschooling. Be sure to give a gift she will never forget.

This is the type of gift that she will praise you for, for years to come and constantly be sharing these gorgeous memories with her family and friends.

With our Mum & Me photo shoots, you have a choice of studio or outdoor sessions. If you have a little baby or a toddler, a simple, pure, authentic photoshoot might be just perfect.

But if your children are a little older and you all love the great outdoors, don’t worry I have you covered.

Although these sessions are named Mum & Me, I always encourage dads to get in on the action too. Although I know this may seem like the worst nightmare. Trust me, it’s worth it. Nothing beats a gorgeous family portrait, proudly displayed in your home. Not to mention, that true smile on her face. Knowing that not only you booked the shoot but actually made the effort to get involved too.

So if you would like to give her the most epic gift and want to know more just drop me a message here.

The most lovely way to start a Mother’s Day morning.

A TOUCH OF LUXURY WITH JESSICA STEELE JEWELLERY

Let’s face it, who doesn’t love a gorgeous, luxurious, piece of jewellery?! Even more so if they tell a story or it’s a sentimental piece.

I remember back when I was a little girl, I used to spend hours searching for that perfect necklace or bracelet for my mum, before asking my dad to go buy it with me. And seeing the smile on her face was so worth it.

A beautiful bracelet or necklace is a perfect way to show mums all the appreciation. And one of my favourite jewellers out there is Jessica Steele Jewellery. With her beautiful, delicate pieces, there’s plenty to choose from to put a smile on her face.

Doorstep Portraits – Christmas

Doorstep Portraits – Christmas

Doorstep portraits – Christmas, is certainly a strange title for end of January blog, but I thought it may catch your attention.

Firstly, I do want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year (as happy as it can be)!

Yes…I am completely aware of it being end of January. However, with the news at the beginning of the year, homeschooling has completely took over our household. Any evening work has been placed on hold and replaced with a large glass of wine and early nights. That’s until we managed to get some sort of routine going. Although I am still working through this routine.

So, here I am (currently 11.58pm trying desperately to catch up with writing my blogs).

WHAT IS DOORSTEP PORTRAITS?

If you’ve not heard of door step portraits before, it started back in the first lockdown of 2020. When the Coronavirus pandemic has brought everything to halt, we found ourselves clapping for NHS and key workers, painting rainbows and forced to stop seeing our family and friends. Our studios also had to close and that’s where door step portraits were born. I’d say it was the perfect way to document a part of “the year we all stayed home”

So I had an idea, to do the same for the people in my neighbourhood. But during the most magical time of the year: Christmas. With many people still working from home and many venues closed, it was the perfect pick me up for everyone. A perfectly safe way to capture you and your family in the comfort of your own front door. Whilst still being able to social distance, making it fun and safe at the same time.

A BIG THANK YOU

I must say it was so much fun capturing these photographs, seeing all the excitement on children’s faces, all ready for Christmas is truly joyful. Particularly in such difficult times. With everyone getting their decks out, wearing Christmas jumpers and outfits, the Christmas spirit was certainly in the air.

So I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone taking part and trusting me to create these gorgeous memories for you. And I will certainly be doing them towards the end of this year.

What to wear to your summer photo shoot

What to wear to your summer photo shoot

Choosing what to wear to a photography session, can be some what stressful! So, in this “what to wear to your summer photo shoot” blog. I would like to take that stress away. And help you with choosing something comfortable but practical and works perfectly well with the chosen location.

Firstly, I have to say, I can’t express enough how excited I am to be back to photographing all the families and little babies (safely of course).

Summer time is also one of my favourite seasons, those beautiful warm evenings, all the flowers, the sunset, it just makes my heart sing.

Below I have put together some tips for choosing a summer wardrobe with a family photo shoot in mind.

COLOUR PALETTE & COORDINATION

Choosing a colour palette is actually very important when it comes to a family photography session. You can choose from 2-4 different colours, that compliment one another.

The easiest way to do this, is looking at different tones, such as, pastels, earthy, neutral etc.

For example, in the image here, white, pink and blue work well together. As well as with the location.

If you’re struggling in putting colours together, you can’t go wrong with a neutral palette. Here are some ideas you can browse through on my Pinterest board.

KEEP IT SIMPLE & COMFORTABLE

My outdoor sessions take place in fields, parks and woodlands. Places where I want children and parents to have a little fun and enjoy the nature too.

I want you to feel your best and most comfortable at the session. I want you to look back at your photos and see your true self, your childrens little personalities and connections. Choosing a lovely outfit that’s comfortable, really helps achieving that.

Although most of my families like to dress up a little, I always advice to keep it more simple, a nice summary day dress or jeans and summer shirt always work well.

WHAT DO I NEED TO AVOID?

The biggest no, no when it comes to picking an outfit for a photo session is anything with big logos, cartoon characters, text or huge prints.

You and your family is the main focus in all the photographs, therefore it’s of importance that we don’t draw attention away from that.

Also avoid miss matching colours.

Taking Professional Photos With Your Phone

Taking Professional Photos With Your Phone

So I am going to admit as a professional photographer, I’ve always been totally rubbish at taking more professional photos with my phone. Knowing what I can do with my camera, always stopped me from trying to do a better job.

But, since the lockdown I’ve been working on improving my smartphone photography skills.

I have to admit they don’t turn out the same as they do with my big camera. But I’ve managed to capture some lovely memories of the kids and be happy with the result.

LIGHT

Light is the absolute key to photography. Without good light it’s hard to take a nice photo. The same applies to smart phone photography. The direction of light and how harsh it is, plays a big part in the final image.

When taking a photo, always make sure your subjects face is lit well. I always try and find a room with the best light (where it’s not too harsh or too dark). If the rooms in your house are fairly dark, try and get as close to the window as you can.

ANGLES

Try different angles. If you’ve found a room with good light or you’re taking photos outside, play around. A lot of the time we pick our phone up and are guilty of, just snapping away. Looking straight on to the subject, with the phone held in upright position.

Try to photograph from above or below (maybe when your little ones are busy playing). Simply turning the phone landscape can also give you some more interesting images.

CAMERA SETTINGS

Camera settings vary depending on the smartphone manufacturer. But these are the things that can be done on every phone:

Turn your grid on – to help make sure you’re taking your photos straight (I’m terrible for taking my photos on a slight angle without a grid). And play around with where on the grid you’d like to place your subject.

Focus point – always use it to make sure exactly what you want is in focus.

Keep HDR turned on (High Dynamic Range). This helps balance highlights and shadows, creating an image that resembles more of what our human eye sees.

Stay away from camera flash. Unless it’s unavoidable, for example at night or really low light situations. It tends to make the image worse. When used you’ll find that you might have over lit skin, unwanted red eyes and a flat look to your images. And generally it just ruins the quality.

Avoid zoom at all costs. When using smartphone zoom, it doesn’t just zoom in, it actually crops your images. Resulting in a very poor quality photo.

EDITING

There are various apps you can download onto your phone for free or at a small cost. My favorite ones are Snapseed and Lightroom Mobile.

Lightroom Mobile is fantastic but can take a little while to get used to. I do use it on all my smartphone edits. And mainly stick to adjusting Light (so exposure, contrast and highlights). As well as crop tool, and I occasionally adjust the temperature.

Snapseed is also pretty great, there are some amazing looks you can choose from or edit your photo manually. Again, I keep it pretty simple. Either changing my images to black and white or playing around with exposure and contrast.

I hope this has been helpful and you can create some gorgeous memories with your kids whilst in lockdown and afterwards. I would love to see what you’ve come up with <3.

Perfect Christmas Gifts for Expectant Mums

Perfect Christmas Gifts for Expectant Mums

I’ve been sat here wondering if to add a number to this blog, such as “Top 10 gifts”. However, I am going to take the number out. Maybe I’ll come back to it and add more every year. After all, I’m not sure if you can summarise it down to just “Top 10”. There’s just so many “Perfect Christmas gifts for expectant mums”.

I thought I would start writing about the presents that I would have enjoyed. I must admit, as a previously expectant mum, my head always wondered when asked what I wanted, whilst pregnant. Do I ask for practical gifts or something to treat me and the baby?!

The gift of making memories and lovely keepsakes

Babymoon – this is becoming an increasingly popular gift. Babymoon gift is where you would book an escape for the mum to be. This could be a spa break, a weekend away with afternoon tea or even a weekend abroad. This is an amazing idea and something that a number of friends or family can be involved in too.

Newborn Photo ShootI promise I am not adding “Newborn photo shoot” in just because I am a photographer. In fact I’ve come across many mums who’ve said they would have loved a photo shoot as a gift. There’s nothing better than looking back in time at those precious moments, remembering how tiny they were.

Hand and Foot Casting – hand and foot casting is another way to freeze a moment in time. Capturing wonderfully delicate details, the little creases and wrinkles that will last forever. Creating these memories with a professional is always the best way to go. Marie from Crafty Chops in Leeds has a lot of experience and creates beautiful casts. If you’re looking to gift just a small present. You can also buy little casts to make baby hand and foot prints in places such as Hobbycraft.

Accessories – there are some gorgeous and meaningful accessories for mums to be. Pandora have an amazing collection of charms for expectant mums. You may also find a big variety of accessories on Etsy.

Baby Journal – a baby journal is a really thoughtful gift. A place where you can add photographs and stories of the day you had. Something that will be treasured more and more as the years go by. Claude and Co have some stunning but natural baby journals that are just perfect as a Christmas gift.

Personalised Scan Print Framethis is another thoughtful and beautiful gift. Somewhere to display the first photos of the baby.

‘A Letter to My Mum’ Poem Picturethis is a gorgeous gift that will make any expectant mum tear up with happy tears. A perfect gift to make a mum to be, feel special.

Practical but perfect Christmas gifts

A Maternity Total Body Pillow – as much as this is practical, it’s going to be one of the best gifts. Comfort is everything during pregnancy and getting comfortable at night becomes a real struggle. It’s what we think about a lot during pregnancy, comfort and a good night sleep. I loved using the JoJo Maman BeBe Microbean Maternity Sleep Pillow. However there are plenty more you can purchase in other places including Amazon.

A Feeding Pillow – now this one I guess is maybe a bit strange for a Christmas gift. And you may need to know the person well before you buy it. Not everyone breastfeeds, but from personal experience and friends too, it has been one of the best gifts. They are also used for helping mums hold their babies in the first days, and are super comfortable to use. There is plenty of choice on Amazon.

Gift Vouchers – whether it’s for a super market, a shopping mall or Amazon vouchers. This is a simple but a fantastic gift. You can then be sure that the mum to be will be able to spend it just how she wants.

Groegg – A night light with a thermometer. This is a lovely practical gift to help parents. Not only does it tell you the temperature. The colour of the light changes if the temperature is too low or too high in the babies room. It’s a practical gift but some what luxurious. You can purchase the GroEgg from the company directly or other retailers such as Boots, John Lewis, Amazon and more.

Meal Vouchers – when you first have a baby, thinking of what to cook is the last thing on your mind. Getting a take out can also be costly. Of course we all have chips and other frozen items, but it just doesn’t always do it. Marks & Spencers have delicious ‘Dine in for two’ meals that both mum and dad would enjoy in the first few days of having a baby.  You can also send a gift card from Hello Fresh. Parents can redeem it when they need to (please check if there’s a time limit).

Changing Bag – a lovely changing bag is a great gift. We love our handbags, and changing bags are not an exception. After all, we will be carrying it everywhere on a daily basis. I adore Cath Kidston changing bags, not only are they beautiful but fantastic quality too.

Pampering Gifts

A pampering session – when we are expecting a baby, we sometimes forget to care for ourselves. Our minds are always on growing our baby and treating them before they are even here. If the mum has children already, there is just no time at all to think about being pampered. Buying a pregnancy friendly massage could be exactly what the mum needs. Having a voucher gifted, will certainly persuade any mum to go. You can find a number of independent businesses who provide pampering sessions in and around Barnsley on Treatwell. You may also find many spas in hotels that will provide pregnancy friendly pampering sessions.

Manicure or a Pedicure – this is another lovely pampering gift you could give an expectant mum for Christmas. You can either buy vouchers to visit the salon or book a mobile technician to do a home visit. Just search for local nail technicians around your area.

Hair appointment – our hair does tend to get ruined after pregnancy for a while. A hair appointment voucher would be the perfect present for an expectant mum. She can go treat herself when ever she wants. Tammie and her team at Quiffs and Curls and Bentley’s Hair Salon are amazing if you’re in Barnsley area.

Yoga classes – although it requires a form of exercise, it’s really relaxing and could make a difference during birthing. Not to mention it’s a great way to relieve stress. There are some fantastic ante-natal classes out there. Such as Pre and Post Natal Yoga at Holistic Wellbeing or Mind, Body and Spirit. The NHS website has plenty of other places available too.

Bath oils and creams – there are thousands of oils and creams you could gift this Christmas to an expectant mum. My favourite are, Neal’s Yard and Bloom and Blossom product range. You can choose either individual products or sets.

The good old slippers and pyjamas – all I can say is, I pretty much lived in mine. Every time we got home, the first thing I did was get dressed into my pyjamas and cosy slippers.

Books – reading books is another item many women love during pregnancy. They don’t always have to be pregnancy related. I think I read about 1 per month during my first pregnancy. Getting dressed into pyjamas, climbing into bed with a great book is really relaxing. Not to mention it’s great for the baby too, if you read out loud.

I hope this has given you plenty of ideas for when looking at “Perfect Christmas Gifts for Expectant Mums”.

I would love to hear from you, your ideas and what you think, so please pop a comment below.
