OUR FAMILY TRIP

Hello and welcome! I am Anna, a photographer and a mother based in Yorkshire, UK. Some of you may already know me, but since this blog post is about our travels and not baby related. I wanted to introduce myself.

Why am I even writing this blog you might ask?

Truthfully, I really enjoyed capturing some memories at Portes Beach Hotel, Halkidiki, documenting and creating a little bit of content to look back on that can easily be shared with others. And, since I am really enjoying blogging lately, this seemed like the perfect way. It might even get you inspired in booking a break here.

It’s actually been quite a while since we’ve last travelled abroad, 7 years precisely, therefore it was our first time as a family of 4. We were certainly excited but I was a little nervous too. Will the kids like it, will the temperature be too hot, will the resort be as nice as in the photos?! Not to mention, the packing. Making sure we remember everything, was certainly making me feel a tad bit anxious.

This was also our first time booking with Jet2 Holidays and visiting Greece.

So, scroll down to see some gorgeous photos of the resort, the beach and have a read about our time there.

BOOKING WITH JET2 HOLIDAYS

Previously we have always travelled with TUI. But, after many recommending Jet2. We had to try it.

The website is incredibly easy to browse, therefore easy to find exactly what you need from your holiday (I often find that if a website is too busy and I can’t find steps of how to navigate it easily, I leave pretty quickly).

Once we found where we wanted to go (after 3 weeks of searching), we decided to book our stay over the phone with a representative. I don’t know about you, but something just makes me feel better, booking through an actual person.

The process was simple and quick. And, just like that, the 6 week countdown begun.

At the airport, the organisation was fantastic, there was plenty of staff, all very organised. Therefore, we knew where to go the minute we stepped in.

The flights were great too. Friendly staff and a lovely in-flight experience.

THE HOTEL – PORTES BEACH

As a photographer I would say it’s a gorgeous space for family photographs, lots of beautiful colours, scenery and not to mention being right on the beach with a sunset view.

Upon arrival we were greeted and checked in by 3 lovely ladies. Whom were very friendly, approachable and checked us in pretty quick. So, off we went to start our holiday.

Our room was a little further down from the main hotel building (but this worked for us, as we were closer to the pool and beach).

Although, this is a fairly small resort (in comparison to where we have stopped before), it really doesn’t feel it.

The grounds of Portes Beach Hotel are stunning, very clean and well looked after, with those wonderful Mediterranean colours and plenty of greenery too (scroll down to see some of it’s beauty).

We all instantly fell in love.

ROOMS

Our room was spacious and had a modern feel, the beds were comfortable, with a lovely balcony that looked out onto some of that gorgeous greenery. We certainly took advantage every morning and evening.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get any photos of the room but you can check them out on their own website here. The photos are pretty accurate, minus the fruit and flower decorations.

The rooms were cleaned every day and towels changed too, I was impressed to see that we all had a towel each after hearing some resorts only give you 2, even when there’s a family of 4.

Firstly we sorted our luggage, then quickly changed, got our beach bag ready and off we went to explore and enjoy our lunch. Kids were so excited to get in the pool despite being awake from 2am.

Anyway, scroll down to see some of Portes Beach Hotel beauty.

OUR EXPERIENCE

When booking a holiday this year, firstly, we wanted to go somewhere quieter but with just enough activities for the kids. We mainly wanted to rest, enjoy the water and maybe see some local culture or go out on a boat trip.

Portes Beach Hotel in Halkidiki, seemed the perfect fit. Quiet spot that is situated right on the beach, with 2 pools, water sports on site, kids park and kids club. With an option to book excursions, not too far away.

As a result of an illness (more about that further down) we actually ended up staying at the resort for the full week. This did have me worried a little. As we are used to venturing out and don’t particularly like staying in same place.

Although we didn’t use the kids club much (as our kids seemed a little too old for it). The pools, beach, water sports and park was enough to keep the kids entertained. With a bar and restaurant next to the pool we didn’t have to go far to enjoy a beverage or some yummy grub.

Having a shop on site also helped, you could get many things, from souveniours to food, toys, drinks, sun cream, skin care, jewellery and more, you weren’t short of anything.

As a result of having to change our plans. We stocked up on rings for the pool, a ball, uno cards and normal playing cards.

Alternating between pools, days on beach, walks, renting out paddling boat as well as the visit to the park (which is right next to the little pool), it was just perfect.

With the resort being smaller, it actually really helped. Everything is so close together (but not crammed). If we fancied a change from one pool to the other, a walk on the beach or park, it was all within a minute walking distance. Including the bar and the pool restaurant. And if you didn’t fancy to go in the restaurant during it’s opening times. You could always pick up a pizza, hot dogs, club sandwich or ice cream in the bar area.

RESTAURANTS & FOOD

The resort has two restaurants, the main one in the hotel itself (this is where we dined at breakfast and dinner). And, the pool restaurant which was only open for lunch. Secretly, I would have loved to dine there in the evening. Simply because of the view.

There was just enough choice of food in both restaurants, that catered for different taste buds. Therefore, if you have little ones that are fussy, you would always find something.

From plenty of salads, dips, fruit and various warm foods. We also had just enough choice. The things that stood out the most were greek salad (of course), sea food, grilled chicken, muscles and some of the meat stews with potatoes were delicious. The desserts were also yummy, we got a little bit of everything to share.

If I was to make a suggestion though, I would have loved themed food nights. Or maybe even open up the pool resturant in the evening for a themed dinner night. I’ve always loved this concept and enjoyed many Spanish, Mexican, Italian nights, when travelling previously. I think it would be great to do this at Portes Beach Hotel with a night of just authentic Greek cuisine as well – yum!

A SHOUT OUT TO THE HOTEL STAFF

Not all of the holiday unfortunately was perfect. Our daughter had come away slightly under the weather and got worse within a day of being there.

When your kids get ill and you are in a different country, the anxiety levels are naturally higher.

The staff at the reception were incredibly helpful. When we were just about to head out to find a pharmacy. They suggested to order what we needed over the phone and get it delivered straight to the reception (basically sorted it all for us). And it only took 20 minutes. I must say I was blown away. Not only was this convenient but much cheaper too, than booking taxis.

The paracetamol wasn’t enough unfortunately, with her gland swelling we knew there was something else brewing. And to our total surprise and shock, the next morning, she had what looked like a fit/passing out. Something that has never happened before. And I have to say, it was utterly terrifying. Luckily, she came out of it pretty fast and we were able to slowly get her to reception to see where we can go. Again they had straight away ordered a taxi and sent us to a local doctor (which by the way was free of charge just like the NHS doctors here in the UK). They really didn’t have to do this as we knew there was a private doctor on site (which was extortionately priced), but they did everything to help.

We were seen to fast and saved our money. I think that is always a worry for many, when travelling abroad. How much will this or that cost should something happen?!

The doctor was really good, checked her over and sent her straight to hospital to make sure she has full checks and to confirm his opinion. All in all, this took around 3 hours with travelling too. We came away with antibiotics and some probiotics. These luckily kicked in quickly and we were able to get back to enjoying our holiday.

Ooo, and they taste good too (surprisingly).

So I just want to give a huge shout out to the reception staff, your input in getting us seen to properly, and your calm presence has been incredible. Thank you!

WATCH A LITTLE VIDEO OF OUR STAY HERE

Overall, I think we had a good family holiday. Although, I do wish we could have ventured out to see what’s around, we just didn’t want to risk it. Make sure you do if you visit Portes Beach Hotel, I hear there are some stunning beaches around.

Maybe next time, we will book 10 nights or 2 weeks. Seven nights is not quite enough.

If you are thinking of visiting here and want to ask any questions, please pop a comment at the bottom of the page.

Hope you have enjoyed this blog.

How to choose a newborn photographer

How to choose a newborn photographer

HOW TO CHOOSE A NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER

5 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN LOOKING FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

How to choose a newborn photographer?!

I imagine this question has crossed your mind at least once. After all, this is such a precious and wonderful time. You want to make sure you have chosen the right photographer to capture your beautiful memories.

The first days and weeks are filled with many emotions, sleepless but beautiful nights and many adjustments. Knowing that you have chosen that photographer, takes away the worries you might have and gets you feeling all excited for the day.

Photographing your new family should always be a beautiful experience.

Not only do you need to feel comfortable during your photo session but you also want to achieve the results you were looking for.

It can certainly feel daunting when you first start looking.

Therefore I have put together some steps to help you get started:

1. ALLOW YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME

I always recommend to start planning and looking for a photographer at around 20 week mark.

Although, any time after 12 weeks is even better.

This gives you plenty of time to plan ahead and properly do your research, look at different photographers, their styles and what they offer.

Once you have found your photographer and booked, all you need to do is let them know your baby is here and you can confirm your photo session date.

However, as a busy mum myself I know doing anything ahead of time can be challenging. So, if you haven’t managed to do it in time. I would always suggest to enquire anyway. Chances are you might still get in, as babies are hardly born on time.

2. CHOOSE A STYLE YOU LOVE

This is probably one of the most important tips.

Don’t just pick any photographer with any style.

They are creating your memories, choose someone with the style that really speaks to you.

Take your time in making this decision. And also consider where and how you want to display your photographs and what will look good in your space.

There are various newborn photography styles out there, here is a short list:

Posed – usually created in a studio space or by a mobile photographer, using a number of props, different fun poses and various colours that you might love.

Lifestyle – usually created in the comfort of your own home, mainly photographing the authenticity of you and your bundle of joy. Keeping posing to a minimum and focusing on genuine moments and interactions in your own loving environment.

Natural – a natural styled shoot, is what you will find on this website. There is still an element of posing your baby and guiding you into beautiful lighting. However the posing is natural, with the focus remaining on your baby and all their little details. These kind of shoots can be created in both studio space and your own home.

Documentary – very similar to a lifestyle shoot, but the emphasis is more on capturing you and your family in your environment, doing your thing, just the way you are.

The above are just short descriptions.

Take a look and research each one and see what resonates with you the most.

Consider your emotional connection to the style. Some styles may resonate with you on a deeper level, evoking certain emotions or capturing the essence of your newborn in a way that feels authentic to you.

Maybe even create a Pinterest board, add everything that you like to that board.

You will soon see exactly which style is your favourite.

3. READ THROUGH REVIEWS

Reviews & testimonials create trust.

Finding a trustworthy, professional photographer to work with should also be at the top of the list. After all, you have to know you’re in safe hands.

Although there are no qualifications required to be a professional photographer. Asking the right questions and doing your research will help you in making your decision.

Personal referrals are always the best when it comes to looking for a photographer. Ask your friends and relatives first. But if you don’t know anyone who has had an experience with a photographer, make sure you check out reviews and testimonials.

Take your time in reading them to get a good idea of the experience previous clients have had.

This feedback can help you gauge the photographer’s reliability, professionalism, and customer satisfaction.

4. PREPARE QUESTIONS

When first looking for a photographer, you most likely have many questions. These could include, posing style, safety, time it takes, can parents or siblings be included, prices and packaging, etc.

Some of these questions will already be covered on the photographers website. But I would always encourage writing some down anyway.

Then, I would recommend to schedule a consultation or a call with your shortlisted photographers.

It allows you to discuss your expectations, ask the questions, and get a sense of their personality. It’s important to build a relationship with the photographer, as they will be handling your newborn and capturing intimate moments. You will feel much more relaxed during your photo session, having already built a relationship with them.

However if for any reason you can’t speak to them, always send everything you want across on an email.

NOT SURE WHAT TO ASK?

5. GET TO KNOW YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Why do I need to get to know them and build a relationship?

I would always recommend to build a little bit of a relationship and trust before your session. Book in a call, a virtual meeting or even face to face if it’s possible.

It’s important to do so, as they will be handling your newborn and capturing intimate moments.

It also allows you to discuss your expectations, ask the questions, and get a sense of their personality.

I know this may seem like an extra task, but trust me, you will feel much better having got to know them!

Chances are you might feel tired or even a little emotional on the day, not long after giving birth. Having someone you know a little and trust, makes all the difference.

PHOTOSHOOT WITH MAMAS & PAPAS

GORGEOUS BABIES IN BEAUTIFUL OUTFITS & SCRUMPTIOUS CAKE

I have to start this blog with saying how excited I am to share it, even though the shoot was actually done last year – it’s always better shared later than never.

When I was approached with this opportunity, my heart skipped a beat. Mamas & Papas is by far one of my favourite baby brands.

The shoot was all about creating a campaign in honour of Her Majesty’s The Queen Platinum Jubilee. It was an honour to be a part of!

Since afternoon tea, garden parties and cake is a true British way to celebrate a royal event! It’s a no brainer, a cake smash was a perfect way to showcase some of the Mamas & Papas occasion wear for their Jubilee campaign.

With another royal event “Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III “ upon us, this seems to be the most perfect time to share this blog.

So, here I will share with you, behind the scenes, the gorgeous photos we took and the latest special occasion wear from Mamas & Papas. Did you know that they have recently teamed up with the wonderful Laura Ashlee? You are in for a treat, scroll down to see all the fun and beautiful peaces.

With two beautiful babies, gorgeous flower decorations, and the most yummiest cake from the wonderful “Chocolatey Claire Cakes”, the morning was filled with a lot of fun and full on messy glory a cake smash brings.

We started off with capturing the babies playing a little, laughing and of course posing for the camera – just look at the smiles!

Then once the cake came out, those smiles got even bigger and their little faces were full of yummy crumbs.

There’s something about watching a baby dive into a cake for the first time! The excitement is real!

So here, take a look for yourself:

I am always in awe of the gorgeous little outfits for both boys and girls. They are always great quality, comfortable and beautiful. You will be sure to find something you’ll love. So here is a little moodboard of this years collection. If you would like to see more, just simply take a look at their website, there is always plenty to find.

From clothing, to nursery decor, travelling system and toys, there are so many adorable things to find. I’ve loved both of these brands for years. To see them come together is just wonderful! Take a look for yourself here.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this blog as much as I have enjoyed writing it. It’s finally up and on the website. One of my top achievements, working with such a wonderful brand! A total pinch me moment.

And I hope you have found some lovely new things from this years collection.

May this bank holiday be filled with lots of cake, afternoon tea and maybe even a street or a garden party!

Is it the camera or the the photographer?

Is it the camera or the the photographer?

A BEFORE & AFTER

5 REASONS WHY IT’S NOT JUST THE CAMERA BUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER BEHIND IT

The phrase “your camera takes good photos” or “is it the camera or the photographer” is heard often in the photography world.

My take on these is, both are true!

Having a good camera certainly makes a difference, despite technology improving rapidly, mobile phones or cheap cameras getting better. A good, professional camera is always helpful, built to capture high quality photos, handle low light situations and more.

However understanding your camera and lenses (how and where to use them) makes an even bigger impact on the final result.

Not to mention, what you do after a photo shoot. Enhancing your photographs, or even correcting a few things (because let’s face it, sometimes we capture a photograph that’s not perfect in camera. Harsh light, low light and many more reasons out of the photographers control).

Although getting it as close to perfect in camera is what every photographer should aim for.

If you are looking to understand why it’s not just the camera but the photographer who makes the photo beautiful. Here are 5 reasons, with an added addition of straight out of camera and final image.

1. COMPOSITION

The way the subject is framed, the angle it is shot from, the placement within the frame, and other composition elements are all important in creating an impactful and visually appealing photograph. The camera may have advanced features, but it’s the photographer who chooses how to frame and compose the shot.

Here is an example of a close up of babies lips and facial features. A photograph of babies face is always gorgeous but with the right angle, composition and lighting the focus is placed on those beautiful features.

2. POST PROCESSING

There’s no doubt about it, a good camera does offer advanced features, and some photographs look incredible straight out of camera.

Editing photographs is much more than just clicking a few filters or sliders. Professional photographers spend hours tweaking and perfecting their images to make them stand out. They know how to apply their personal style and vision, and how to use specific editing techniques to create a unique look, these skills are learnt over time through trial and error.

3. VISION

Whether it’s a family, a wedding or a portrait photo shoot. A good photographer knows how to capture the essence of the subject they are photographing.

A camera is just a tool used to capture these moments.

It is only through the photographers vision and ability to connect with a client, beautiful memories are created.

Being able to connect, understand and take a client through what to expect is incredibly important in each photo session. Most people feel uncomfortable in front of the camera, it is the photographers job to make them feel relaxed and comfortable.

4. LIGHTING

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of photography. Understanding what good light is, knowing how to use it, makes all the difference to the final photograph.

The way the light is used to illuminate the subject can significantly impact the final outcome of the picture.

A photographer with the technical knowledge and creative eye can manipulate lighting to create dramatic or subtle effects that can completely change the mood of the picture.

5. TIMING

Cameras may have fast shutter speeds, and burst modes but a professional photographer knows exactly when to take or create a perfect moment.

That moment can be missed otherwise!

The timing of a shot can significantly impact the final image, be it capturing a fleeting expression, a burst of emotion or a perfect landscape shot.

These burst of emotions and fleeting expressions take a photo to the next level.

If you are another photographer, I hope this is useful in someway. Whether you need tips on explaining why it’s not just the camera or if you need ideas on why a client should book with you. I hope you can utilise this somehow.

And if you are looking to book a photographer and not sure on who or how to book, I hope you have picked up some tips for when you are choosing. Or if you are not sure on where to do it yourself, the points above might help you decide.

What to wear to a newborn & baby photoshoot

What to wear to a newborn & baby photoshoot

WHAT TO WEAR TO A NEWBORN & BABY PHOTOSHOOT - YOUR WARDROBE GUIDE

When booking a photo shoot you will have so many questions in mind. One of which is “what do we wear?!”. This is actually an important one, because what you wear makes a huge difference to the final image. In this blog “what to wear to a newborn & baby photoshoot”, I will take you through three simple steps, to help you choose your perfect outfit.

As a new mum, we usually feel a little uncomforable in our skin and a little less confident. And it’s my job to take that stress away and make you feel your best.

So, here are my tips when choosing what to wear:

SIMPLE BUT BEAUTIFUL…

Keep it simple!

To make sure the focus is on you and your baby, eliminating any distraction is key!

My first suggestion is to wear clothing with no bright prints, logos, text or cartoon characters.

Doing just that, keeps the focus solely on what’s important, and that is your baby!

Therefore a plain white or neutral blouse with nice comfortable jeans/chinos (preferably light in colour) or a lovely white/neutral dress works perfectly.

For dads I always suggest a white t-shirt and jeans or chinos.

RELAXED…

Whether you are booking a newborn or an older baby photo shoot comfort is everything.

Feeling yourself and comfortable will naturally make you more relaxed during the shoot.

There is nothing worse than feeling like your clothing is clinging to you. Or feeling hot and not yourself when you’ve just had a baby.

My tip is, find something that fits your body nicely. Something that is not too tight and clingy and nothing that you may feel sweaty in.

A lovely loose dress that compliments your figure is perfect!

Or if you are not a dress person I would opt for some trousers or light coloured jeans and a comfortable but stylish blouse.

Click through the gallery for some examples.

STYLISH…

And the last one I wanted to include in here is “choosing something stylish”. Or something that simply makes you feel nice!

As much as comfort is the most important, I still want you to feel special and beautiful on the day.

This is where I think a lovely relaxed, white or neutral dress always works well!

You will feel your best but comfortable and relaxed!

And as a mum myself I know that throwing on something a little prettier, something stylish, instantly lifts my mood and makes me feel great (even after some sleepless nights).

Now I am sure you may already have something in your closet that fits the brief but if not, I have put together a pinterest board for some extra ideas. I hope this blog has been helpful, but if you have any further questions, just drop me a message here.
